Operating a small business in real life

Running a small business is no small feat. Daily, the demands are unrelenting and often managed by a lean team. Social media will glamorize the experience with quotes and slick production, but the reality of operating a small business is anything but. Is it rewarding? To many, yes. But is it a peaceful, calm journey? Not at all. Realizing business ownership is fraught with uncertainty will prepare you for what is to come.

FIRST, don’t buy into the hype. Owning a business is hard work. It is not all flexible schedules and working from anywhere. It is not the stuff of social media influencers and promises of great wealth. It is sacrifice. It is enduring lean times. It is being uncertain and sometimes involves scraping and clawing to survive. If you accept that at the outset, nothing will surprise you.

NEXT, be self-aware. Know where you shine and know where you need support. There is nothing wrong with needing support, and every business owner needs it. Find a mentor that will offer guidance as you navigate new challenges and work to grow your business.

THEN, don’t expect perfection. Being a business owner involves some trial and error as you figure out the right blend for your company. That is an ongoing exercise, and you will never have everything figured out. Business ownership is a balance between relentlessly pursuing excellence for your company and giving yourself grace.

FINALLY, decide that you are committed for the long run. Nothing lasts forever, but if you are going to invest the time and money into starting a business, you should be committed to seeing it through for the long-term. Market forces and life circumstances may ultimately alter that decision, but the starting position should be that this is a long-term undertaking, and then give it your best.
